Our editorial take on the ARRI Signature Prime 16mm T1.8
The ARRI Signature Prime series represents the pinnacle of optical engineering for large-format digital cinema. Designed in tandem with the Alexa LF camera system, these lenses are the current professional standard, delivering a look that is both technically perfect and artistically pleasing. The 16mm T1.8 is no exception, providing a pristine yet organic image that feels inherently natural and less clinical than some of its high-performance rivals. The rendering is consistently described as gentle and flattering, capturing immense detail without appearing harsh or overly digital.
What truly sets the Signature Primes apart is their character. They produce exceptionally smooth focus fall-off and a soft, painterly bokeh that beautifully separates subjects from their background. This unique quality, combined with the fast T1.8 aperture, gives cinematographers incredible creative control over depth of field, even on a wide focal length like 16mm. Many professionals find that the images from these lenses require very little color correction or post-production work to achieve a polished, cinematic look, saving valuable time and resources. They are not simply tools for capturing a scene; they are instruments for crafting a specific, high-end aesthetic.

Alongside the new ARRI LF is a new set of full frame lenses. 16 of them ranging from 12 to 280mm at a tasty T1.8. 4 will be initially announced (35mm, 47mm, 75mm and 125mm) and will ship early June 2018.
ARRI announced its range of Signature Zooms in September last year. I have been able to get early access to prototype versions of these lenses for a couple of days to put them through their paces.
Signature Primes had people talking in 2020 because they produce a natural look "that requires minimal post-production."
