Our editorial take on the Atlas Lens Co. Orion 21mm T2 2x Anamorphic Prime Lens (PL Mount, Feet)
The Atlas Orion 21mm T2 represents a significant milestone, not just for the popular Orion series, but for anamorphic cinematography as a whole. It delivers an unprecedented 124-degree horizontal field of view, claiming the title of the widest front 2x anamorphic production lens available. This opens up entirely new creative possibilities for capturing expansive landscapes, tight interiors, and dramatic establishing shots with a perspective that was previously unattainable in a single prime.
Crucially, this new focal length does not sacrifice the beloved character of the Orion line. It produces the same iconic blue-streak flares, pleasing oval bokeh, and cinematic squeeze that filmmakers have come to expect. Of course, a lens this wide comes with its own unique properties. Users should expect and embrace a healthy amount of barrel distortion and edge softness, which are part of the creative trade-off for such an extreme perspective. It is a lens of immense character, not clinical perfection.
While the Orion series has been praised for making the anamorphic look more accessible, the 21mm's professional-grade price point places it firmly in the territory of rental houses and serious owner-operators. It is a specialized, high-impact tool designed to supplement an existing lens package for those moments when nothing else will do. It seamlessly matches its siblings, making it a powerful, if niche, addition to any Orion set.
- Unprecedented 124-degree horizontal field of view
- World's widest production 2x front anamorphic lens
- Maintains the classic Orion anamorphic character and flare
- Seamlessly matches the look of other Orion series lenses
- Robust, professional build quality
- Very high price point makes it an investment
- Significant, though character-rich, barrel distortion
- A highly specialized tool, not an everyday focal length

Editorial reviews
Atlas Lens Co. recently introduced a new wide-angle option to their popular Orion anamorphic series. The new Atlas Orion 21mm T2 2x Anamorphic prime is the widest family member. It comes in PL/EF mount options, offers a 124° horizontal FOV, and provides the same characteristic look this family of lenses is well-known for. The new 21mm is now available for pre-order for $15,000.
21mm is very wide for an anamorphic and as far as I am aware, this makes it the world’s widest front anamorphic production lens with a 124° horizontal field of view. The goal behind designing the Orion 21mm was to give users a previously unattainable wide-angle anamorphic field of view using a front anamorphic system.
This article discusses Atlas Lens Co.'s new Atlasscope system, which uses an adapter to allow the use of Orion Series anamorphic primes on digital cinema cameras without sacrificing image quality or changing the effective focal length.
These well-regarded ARRI PL-mount lenses can also be adapted for Sony E-mount and Micro Four Thirds, making them suitable for use with a wide array of DSLR, mirrorless, and cine-style cameras.
