Canon RF 100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM Lens Review

At first glance, the Canon RF 100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM seems like a lens built on compromises. Its slow variable aperture and consumer-level price point might cause serious photographers to dismiss it. That, however, would be a mistake. This lens is a masterclass in smart design, delivering a super-telephoto experience that is far better than its specifications or price would suggest. Its most remarkable achievement is its size and weight. At just 635g, it provides incredible reach in a package you can carry all day without a second thought, opening up wildlife and sports photography to a much wider audience.

Performance is where the lens truly surprises. In good daylight, it produces impressively sharp images that punch well above their weight class, aided by a fast, quiet Nano USM autofocus motor and very effective image stabilization. The key trade-off, of course, is that slow aperture. This is fundamentally a daytime lens, and performance in dim or challenging light will require pushing your camera’s ISO to its limits. While it lacks the robust weather sealing and optical perfection of its L-series brethren, it isn’t trying to replace them.
