Our editorial take on the Fujifilm Fujinon XF 8mm F3.5 R WR
The Fujifilm XF 8mm F3.5 R WR confidently answers the call for a truly expansive, rectilinear view within the X-mount ecosystem. Its defining characteristic is its remarkable portability. For a lens this wide, offering a 12mm full-frame equivalent field of view, its compact size and light weight are a genuine engineering achievement. This makes it an easy addition to any camera bag, encouraging you to carry it when you might otherwise leave a bulkier ultra-wide at home. Image quality is consistently strong, with impressive center sharpness and well-controlled distortion that keeps architectural lines straight. The build quality meets Fujifilm’s high standards, complete with weather resistance for field use.
Of course, achieving this compact form factor required a key compromise, and that is the modest f/3.5 maximum aperture. This is not a lens for low-light astrophotography or creating shallow depth of field, it is a tool designed primarily for daytime landscapes, cityscapes, and travel documentation. The lack of optical image stabilization further solidifies its role for well-lit scenarios or tripod-based work. While these are not so much flaws as they are deliberate design choices, potential buyers must understand them. The lens excels at its intended purpose, delivering a unique and dramatic perspective that was previously missing from the native XF lineup.
- Extremely compact and lightweight for an ultra-wide lens
- Excellent center sharpness and overall image quality
- Widest rectilinear prime available for the X-mount
- Durable, weather-resistant construction
- Minimal barrel distortion for a lens this wide
- Modest f/3.5 maximum aperture limits low-light capability
- No optical image stabilization
- Corner sharpness can be soft when shooting wide open

This new 8mm (12mm focal length equivalent to 35mm) compact prime features a Super EBC multilayer lens coating and an f/3.5 aperture. This doesn’t seem fast but bear in mind that this is a lens from the compact prime, and the widest ultra-fast prime lens thus far is the XF 14mm f/2.8 R.
This is a sharp, take-anywhere lens with nice construction. If you need a wide-angle, the 8mm won't let you down.
Coming up sometime in 2023 is a new ultra-wide-angle prime, an XF 8mm F3.5. This new 12mm-equivalent wide-angle lens will be the widest rectilinear lens in the X Series lens lineup. Even with a wide focal length, the lens is said to be compact and lightweight and therefore an ideal choice for a walk-around wide-angle lens.
