Our editorial take on the Fujifilm GFX 50S
The Fujifilm GFX 50S arrived as the first 51.4-megapixel medium format mirrorless camera, undercutting traditional MF systems in both size and price at $6,499. Reviewers praised its exceptional image quality, with some calling it among the best they'd tested. The colors are rich and clear, textures are vibrant, and the out-of-focus transitions deliver the signature medium format look. Portability is a standout here: at 740 grams body-only and built around a weather-sealed magnesium alloy frame, it brings MF shooting to scenarios where bulk was once a barrier.
The tradeoffs are real. Continuous shooting tops out at just 3fps with the mechanical shutter and an anemic 1.8fps with the electronic front curtain, making this a poor fit for fast action. Video is limited to Full HD at 30p with a 36Mbps bitrate and a 30-minute recording cap, clearly not a priority. Contrast-detect autofocus, while capable of face and eye detection, lacks the speed and tenacity of modern phase-detect systems. This is a camera built for deliberate, high-resolution still work where image quality is paramount and shooting pace is measured.
- Exceptional image quality with rich color and detail from 51.4MP medium format sensor
- Compact and portable for a medium format camera at 740g body weight
- Weather-sealed magnesium alloy build with dual UHS-II SD card slots
- Three-way tilting 3.2-inch touchscreen and high-resolution 3.69M-dot OLED viewfinder
- Fast electronic shutter up to 1/16000s expands shooting flexibility
- Very slow continuous shooting at 3fps mechanical, 1.8fps electronic front curtain
- Video limited to Full HD 30p with low bitrate and 30-minute cap
- Contrast-detect AF slower than modern phase-detect systems

The colors are abundantly clear and rich. The textures are vibrant and lively and the in/out of focus transitions are a sight to behold. All of ...
