Our editorial take on the P+S Technik Evolution 2X 50mm Anamorphic (PL)
P+S Technik has delivered something special with the Evolution 2X series. These lenses are not merely inspired by the past; they are meticulously crafted modern reconstructions of the legendary Kowa anamorphic primes from the 1970s. The goal isn't clinical perfection. Instead, the Evolution 2X 50mm provides cinematographers with direct access to the coveted character and aberrations of true vintage glass, but housed in a robust, reliable, and professional-grade body suitable for the rigors of a modern set. This eliminates the gamble often associated with finding and maintaining 50-year-old optics.
The defining feature is the classic 2x squeeze factor, which produces the dramatic, stylized look many creators chase with filters or less capable lenses. Expect intense, characteristic flares and beautifully pronounced oval bokeh. This is the authentic article. While the market is now flooded with more affordable 1.33x or 1.5x anamorphic options, the Evolution 2X lenses occupy a different tier entirely. They are a premium, professional tool designed for productions that specifically require that iconic vintage anamorphic aesthetic without compromise.
This is not a lens for the owner-operator on a budget or for projects demanding clean, versatile imagery. It is a highly specialized instrument for recreating a beloved cinematic look. The price reflects this professional focus, placing it firmly in the rental house and high-end production space. For those with the budget and the specific creative need, however, the Evolution 2X is a direct line to a classic look with none of the vintage headaches.
- Authentic recreation of the vintage Kowa 2x anamorphic look
- True 2x squeeze ratio for classic anamorphic characteristics
- Modern, professional cine housing offers reliability
- Strong, desirable flaring and oval bokeh
- Fills a niche for high-end, character-rich optics
- Very high price point, geared toward rental houses
- Strong character can be overpowering for some projects
- Not a versatile, all-purpose lens

Editorial reviews
P+S Technik has recently introduced a new line of close focus 1.5x anamorphic lenses, the TECHNOVISION 1.5X AproXima series. Their image circle covers large-format sensors and their lens mount is interchangeable between PL and LPL options.
P+S TECHNIK has started producing Kowa Evolution lenses, clones of the classic Kowa anamorphic 2x prime lenses that that were last made in the 1970s. The lenses don’t have to be purchased as a set and you can buy them individually, but you better have deep pockets! If you are a Panasonic GH5 owner then these may be a little bit out of your reach, but hey, you can always rent.
