Our editorial take on the Panasonic Lumix GH6
The Panasonic Lumix GH6 stands as a testament to the power and potential of the Micro Four Thirds format, specifically for the dedicated videographer. It is a production powerhouse, cramming an almost unbelievable suite of professional-grade video features into a mirrorless body. With specs like internal 5.7K ProRes recording, a vast array of anamorphic options, and silky-smooth high frame rates including 4K at 120p, the GH6 delivers on the promise of its lineage. This is a camera built for intentional filmmaking, offering unlimited recording times thanks to its active cooling system and some of the best in-body image stabilization in the business.
However, the GH6 is not without its trade-offs, and they are significant. The camera's primary weakness remains its contrast-detect autofocus system, which, while capable, simply lacks the tenacious reliability of the phase-detect systems found in virtually all of its key competitors. This makes it a less-than-ideal choice for vloggers or creators who depend on flawless subject tracking. Furthermore, while the new 25.2MP sensor is the best a M43 camera has offered, it is still a M43 sensor. It cannot defy the laws of physics, meaning low-light performance and the ability to achieve ultra-shallow depth of field will lag behind larger full-frame systems. The GH6 is an exceptional tool, but it's a specialized one.
