Our editorial take on the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 Lens (Sony E)
The Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 G2 is not just an update, it's a new benchmark for third-party standard zooms. Building on the immense success of its revolutionary predecessor, this second-generation lens refines the formula with sharper optics and a significantly faster, more decisive VXD linear autofocus motor. The result is a lens that punches well above its weight, delivering impressively crisp images from corner to corner, even when shooting wide open at f/2.8. It confidently challenges first-party alternatives that command much higher prices.
What truly sets the G2 apart is its masterful balance of performance, portability, and price. While competitors may offer a wider 24mm starting point, Tamron's decision to stick with a 28mm wide end allows for a remarkably compact and lightweight design that is a joy to carry all day. This thoughtful compromise, combined with modern features like a USB-C port for firmware updates and function customization, makes the lens incredibly practical. It is an intelligent, high-value choice for nearly any Sony shooter looking for a fast, versatile, and reliable workhorse zoom.

It's the lens that I've been shouting about since I reviewed it: The Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 Di III RXD is an absolute game-changer for Sony shooters. In fact, if you own a Sony full-frame mirrorless camera, you should probably just go out and buy this lens (unless you already have the Sony 24-70mm F2.8 GM).
Tamron has just announced a new version of their 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III VXD G2 zoom lens for Nikon Z mirrorless cameras. This lens was originally designed for Sony E-mount cameras; it covers full-frame image sensors, it has a constant F/2.8 maximum aperture, and it features a fast VXD linear focus motor.
According to TAMRON, the new 28-75mm F2.8 G2 is claimed to offer significantly improved optical and autofocus performance, as well as new function customization.
The Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD is sharp, with optimized color, contrast, and tonal values. It performs well even on high-resolution cameras and is smaller, lighter, and more affordable than comparable lenses.
Often, lenses sacrifice image quality for a broader zoom range, or are too large and heavy to carry around all day. Tamron, somehow, avoided both of these pitfalls with the new lens.
During my hands-on time with the G2 version, the lens impressed me with its build quality, lightweight design and imaging performance. Even when shooting wide open, the lens is very sharp throughout much of the full-frame image area.
