Our editorial take on the Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VC VXD G2 Lens (Sony E)
Tamron's first-generation 70-180mm f/2.8 was already a runaway success, prized for delivering professional-grade brightness and solid optics in a package that defied the size and weight conventions of its class. The G2 model is an intelligent and highly anticipated evolution, directly addressing the original's most significant omission by incorporating Tamron's effective Vibration Compensation (VC) system. While this does result in a marginal increase in size and weight, the lens remains impressively compact and manageable compared to first-party 70-200mm alternatives, making the trade-off for stabilization well worth it.
The addition of image stabilization transforms this lens from a great value optic into a truly versatile workhorse for hybrid creators. The optical formula has been refined for even better performance, delivering sharp images with pleasing rendering and maintaining the fast, quiet VXD autofocus motor that's critical for both stills and video work. The primary compromise remains the 180mm maximum focal length, but for many photographers and videographers, the significant savings in weight, size, and cost more than compensate for the missing 20mm. It solidifies its position as a top-tier choice for those who prioritize portability without sacrificing performance.
- Addition of in-lens optical stabilization (VC)
- Excellent sharpness and optical quality
- Impressively compact and lightweight design for its class
- Fast, quiet VXD linear motor autofocus performance
- Strong value proposition compared to first-party lenses
- Shorter maximum focal length at 180mm versus the 200mm standard
- Slightly heavier and larger than the first-generation model

Compact and fast, this lens was specially designed for full-frame Sony E-mount cameras and rounds out Tamron's offering for this series.
I already loved the original 70-180 but Tamron has managed to refine the experience even further. Although the Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 VXD VC G2 is slightly heavier and larger it is still a very easy-to-carry lens by f/2.8 telephoto standards.
The Tamron 70-180mm F2.8 VC G2 is a fast-aperture telephoto zoom lens that blends strong optical performance with portability and stability. Designed for full-frame mirrorless cameras, it incorporates Tamron’s VC (Vibration Compensation) stabilization system for sharper results when shooting handheld.
This new lens is the follow-up to the very popular Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD Lens that was lauded for having good optical performance at a reasonable price.
