Our editorial take on the Zhiyun CRANE-M3 S 3-Axis Handheld Gimbal Stabilizer
The Zhiyun CRANE-M3 S represents a smart and welcome refinement in the ultra-compact gimbal space. It firmly establishes itself as a top-tier competitor to DJI's offerings, delivering performance that often feels like it belongs to a larger, more expensive class of stabilizer. Its strength lies in its excellent portability and surprising versatility. The ability to handle everything from a smartphone to a respectable mirrorless camera setup, combined with a genuinely useful integrated fill light, makes it an incredibly compelling package for creators on the move.
That said, this is an iterative update, not a revolutionary one. The 'S' model improves upon the original M3 with a more convenient quick-release system and other small tweaks, but it follows the current industry trend of conservative, incremental improvements rather than groundbreaking new features. Owners of the previous version will likely not see a compelling reason to upgrade. However, for those entering the market for a compact stabilizer, the M3 S presents a powerful and polished option. Its stabilization is smooth and reliable, and its physical design is both compact and capable for its intended payload.
- Excellent stabilization performance in a compact form factor
- Lightweight and highly portable for travel and run-and-gun shooting
- Integrated bi-color LED fill light is a convenient feature
- Versatile design supports both smartphones and small mirrorless cameras
- Improved quick-release system streamlines workflow
- An incremental update, not a major leap over the previous CRANE-M3
- Payload capacity is still limited to smaller camera and lens combinations
- Balancing can be fussy depending on the specific setup

With the Weebill 3E Cinepeer, Zhiyun continues its legacy of affordable, compact, and surprisingly useful stabilizers that offer high-end performance at a mid-range price.
I ended up going with the Zhiyun Crane-3, but I've been debating between the Zhiyun Crane 3 LAB and the FeiyuTech AK4000. Both gimbals could handle my Sony A7III with a 24-70 GM, but I'm looking for the better choice.
It’s now starting to ship in numbers and I already spent A LOT of time learning all its ins and outs: The Ronin-S is the most promising one-hand gimbal ever made. Can it live up to the hype? Learn EVERYTHING about the Ronin-S here!
While these gimbals look like pretty decent options, there seems to be a lack of innovation when it comes to gimbals in recent years. Maybe it is just me, but companies appear to be putting out new models that don’t differ that much from previous versions.
This trio of new handheld gimbals, the CRANE-M3, the Smooth-5, and the Smooth-X2, are tailored to camera users, advanced smartphone videographers, and general smartphone users, respectively.
