Our editorial take on the Atomos 7" Shogun Ultra Monitor-Recorder
The Atomos Shogun Ultra represents a significant evolution for the monitor-recorder category, solidifying its position as a central hub for professional productions. This is far more than an incremental update. The new AtomOS 11 platform introduces a suite of genuinely useful professional tools, including ARRI False Color and EL Zone exposure control, all viewed on an impressively bright 2000-nit display that remains visible even in challenging light. The device feels refined and purpose-built for the demands of a modern set, moving beyond simple monitoring into a comprehensive workflow tool.
Where the Shogun Ultra truly asserts its dominance is in its recording and connectivity prowess. The headline feature is undoubtedly its ability to capture up to 8K ProRes RAW, but the expanded support for a wider range of standard codecs is just as important for day-to-day versatility. When you combine these recording capabilities with integrated Camera-to-Cloud functionality and dual SDI/HDMI inputs, the Ultra becomes an indispensable asset. It's designed to streamline the entire production pipeline, from a simplified on-set capture process to a more efficient and collaborative post-production experience. This is the new standard for serious filmmakers who need maximum quality and workflow efficiency.

The Atomos Ninja V revolutionizes video quality by recording 10-bit ProRes directly from cameras, bypassing internal compression limits.
It seems that the main reasons to purchase a Shogun 7 over an Inferno are the improved screen and the ability to record 4K at 120p, although the 7-inch Inferno can also do 4k/120p.
At IBC 2023, Atomos just updated its Shogun lineup with two new SDI/HDMI monitor-recorders. Compared to the previous Shogun models, the new Atomos Shogun and Shogun Ultra sport a brighter 2000-nit IPS display, support a wider range of free codecs, integrate Camera-to-cloud capabilities, and are fuelled by the new AtomOS 11 software.
I don’t think the Shogun 7 is really a replacement for the Shogun Inferno, it’s more of an evolution of the Shogun series. While it does share some similarities, the Shogun 7 is a more advanced product.
It offers an incredibly impressive codec list, a 1920x1080 display, and a host of other features, all packed into a small device that will fit right on top of any mirrorless camera or DSLR.
Nick reviews the specs of the CONNECT and Shogun CONNECT for us, and demonstrates how they can help simplify and streamline your workflow.
The new Shogun models use the same new AtomOS 11 operating system as the Ninja, which brings EL Zone exposure referenced colorized image, ARRI False Color, and new scheduled playback and recording tools. They’ll also have more standard codecs, including the 6K Apple ProRes RAW, with the Shogun Ultra getting the 8K option.
