Our take
Worth considering

Our editorial take on the Canon EOS 77D / 9000D

The Canon EOS 77D occupies a deliberate slot between the entry-level Rebel line and the enthusiast-oriented 80D, offering a meaningful step up in autofocus sophistication without the full cost of Canon's mid-tier flagship. Its 45-point all cross-type AF system and Dual Pixel CMOS AF for live view make it noticeably more capable than the Rebels, while the vari-angle touchscreen, built-in wireless connectivity (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC), and dual control dials give it a more mature handling experience. At 540 grams with battery and card, it remains light enough for travel but feels more substantial than the smaller Rebels.

For video shooters, the 77D caps out at 1080/60p with no 4K, which is a limitation compared to newer mirrorless options but typical of DSLRs from this generation. The inclusion of both mic and headphone jacks shows Canon's attention to hybrid creators, though the single SD card slot and 600-shot battery life are reminders of its mid-range positioning. The 24.2-megapixel APS-C sensor delivers solid image quality with an ISO range that extends to 25600 (51200 expanded), and 6 fps continuous shooting is adequate for casual action work.

This camera made sense at launch as a bridge model for advancing enthusiasts, offering key features from the 80D at a lower price. Today it competes with newer mirrorless bodies that offer 4K and better battery efficiency, but for those committed to the DSLR ecosystem and EF glass, the 77D remains a capable workhorse.

Best for: Advancing enthusiasts who want a capable DSLR with strong AF and touchscreen controls without paying 80D prices.
