Our editorial take on the Sony FX3
The Sony FX3 has earned a loyal following among solo shooters and video-focused creators who need Cinema Line performance without the bulk. Built around the same 12MP full-frame sensor and processing as the A7S III, the FX3 trades the viewfinder and traditional hybrid form for a cinema-oriented body that fits gimbals and rigs with ease. Reviewers consistently praise its compact magnesium alloy design, robust dual XLR/TRS inputs (via detachable handle), unlimited recording, and active cooling that prevents overheating on long takes. The 10-bit 4:2:2 internal recording, S-Cinetone color science, and up to 120fps in 4K deliver professional results that hold up years after launch, and the 5.5-stop IBIS paired with fast hybrid autofocus (including reliable face and eye tracking) make handheld work forgiving.
Still, the FX3 is purpose-built for video. The 12MP sensor limits stills to 10fps bursts and relatively low resolution, and the absence of a viewfinder frustrates those who need hybrid versatility. Reviewers note that while the camera excels in controlled or run-and-gun scenarios, it leans heavily on external monitoring for critical focus and framing. At nearly $3900, it sits in a crowded field where competitors like the Canon C50 offer similar compactness (though without IBIS), and the closely related A7S III provides a viewfinder and more traditional ergonomics for hybrid work. For dedicated video production, however, the FX3 remains a favorite that has aged well into 2025.
- Compact, rig-friendly cinema body with excellent build quality and dual XLR inputs
- Outstanding 10-bit 4:2:2 internal recording, 4K 120fps, and S-Cinetone color science
- Unlimited recording with active cooling prevents overheating
- Fast hybrid autofocus with reliable face and eye tracking
- 5.5-stop IBIS makes handheld shooting practical
- No viewfinder, forcing reliance on external monitors for critical work
- 12MP sensor limits still photography and offers only 10fps bursts
- Price positions it against strong competitors with different trade-offs

Overall, while there are a few things that could be improved, the Sony FX3 proved to be an excellent camera for filmmaking.
If you want a hybrid camera, the FX30 isn’t that. If you need or want a hybrid camera, the FX30 isn’t that.
Many of its features are borrowed from A7S III with the main differences lying in the body design and benefits to additional shooting time thanks to an internal fan. The FX3 offers nearly the same specifications as the A7S III but in a body designed to work in camera rigs, making it suitable for those who don’t need the still capture capability of the A7S III.
It competes with the similarly-sized but slightly pricier Sony FX3, though it lacks in-body image stabilization.
A powerful camera that is small in size and big on specifications is something many people want, especially for gimbals and crash cams or a B-Cam. There is no denying the small and powerful form factor has big advantages, and the Sony FX3 has taken on this exact form factor.
The new FX3 is the most compact Cinema Line camera, blending Alpha 7S III-like form with FX6-like cinema performance.
