Our editorial take on the Sony VENICE 2 (8K)
The Sony VENICE 2 represents a significant leap forward in Sony's cinema camera lineup, building on the original VENICE with an 8.6K full-frame sensor and a formidable 16-stop dynamic range. DPs consistently praise its image quality, noting the ability to record X-OCN RAW internally up to 8.6K and ProRes formats up to DCI 4K, which streamlines high-end workflows from set to post. The interchangeable sensor system (you can swap in the 6K sensor from the original VENICE) and robust build with an extensive built-in ND filter wheel make it a versatile workhorse on demanding productions.
Reviewers highlight the camera's strong presence in Hollywood and professional productions, with several DPs emphasizing its cinematic look and practical design improvements over the first generation. The dual base ISOs of 800 and 3200 offer flexibility in varied lighting, and the native E-mount with included PL adapter supports a wide range of glass. Lab tests confirm its impressive dynamic range credentials, placing it alongside top-tier cinema cameras. While the price is steep and the rolling shutter is a consideration for fast-paced action, the VENICE 2 delivers the image quality and reliability that high-end productions demand.
- Outstanding 16-stop dynamic range and 8.6K internal X-OCN RAW recording
- Interchangeable sensor system allows swapping between 8.6K and 6K sensors
- Comprehensive built-in ND filter wheel with nine stops of filtration
- Dual base ISOs (800/3200) provide excellent low-light performance
- Improved ergonomics and robust build quality over the original VENICE
- Electronic rolling shutter may show artifacts with fast motion or whip pans
- Very high price point limits accessibility to top-tier productions

In this article, DPs discuss what makes the Sony VENICE 2 so special.
Borrowing many elements from the original VENICE, the VENICE 2 is a compact, pragmatic, and supercharged package. We are going to take a closer look at the VENICE 2, highlighting its many uses and how it can revolutionize one's workflow from pre- to post-production.
Sony has announced the Venice 2, the successor to the company’s first full-frame cinema camera. It features 8.6K capture, 16-stops of dynamic range, and the ability to interchange sensors between models for added versatility.
The ZV-E1 can film in 1080p FHD at up to 120fps — with 4K / 60 and 1080p / 240 coming later via a firmware update. It lacks 8K recording, but frankly, that feels like a logical omission instead of making the camera larger for the sake of thermals or melting its innards when it inevitably overheats.
Sony has just dropped a bomb on the camera world with the launch of the A1, its new flagship full-frame mirrorless camera with some breakthrough features. With all that, it can easily take on Canon's R5, though it comes at a significantly higher price.
Sony brought truckloads of imaging gear from every corner of its production ecosystem, demonstrating a staggering amount of technology designed to work in sync for the clearest, fastest, and most immersive Super Bowl production to date.
Sony is following up on its original high-end modular Venice cinema camera with an updated model: the Venice 2. The new camera will be available with either a new 8.6K sensor or a 6K Venice sensor.
It always feels special to me when a “real” cinema camera arrives for me to run it through a lab test – there is always the hope that a new benchmark is set for our lab test results, as the last time this happened was with the ARRI ALEXA Mini LF and Classic. So I was super curious what Sony have up their sleeves with the new VENICE 2 cinema camera.
