Our editorial take on the Canon EOS R1 Mark II
The Canon EOS R1 firmly establishes itself as the company's first true mirrorless flagship, a thoroughbred camera engineered with a singular focus on speed. This is not a generalist's tool but a specialized instrument for professionals who cannot afford to miss a moment. It definitively improves upon the performance of the EOS R3, carving out its own niche for sports, wildlife, and photojournalism, while leaving high-resolution duties to its capable sibling, the EOS R5 Mark II. The R1 is a statement piece, signaling a new tier of performance in Canon's ecosystem for a very specific, and demanding, user.
The camera's capabilities are rooted in its core technology, a stacked sensor paired with dual processors that deliver blistering performance. This translates to an incredible 40 frames-per-second RAW burst rate with continuous autofocus, backed by Canon's most advanced subject detection and tracking to date. For hybrid shooters, the internal 6K RAW video recording and the ability to capture stills simultaneously are game-changers. The much-discussed 24-megapixel resolution is not a drawback but a deliberate engineering choice, prioritizing readout speed, data throughput, and excellent low-light performance over sheer pixel count. This is the trade-off that makes the R1 a master of action.
- Phenomenal autofocus speed and subject tracking
- Blistering 40 fps RAW burst shooting with full AF/AE
- Excellent 6K RAW internal video recording
- Top-tier low-light performance and dynamic range
- Advanced processing with dual DIGIC Accelerator chips
- Robust professional build and ergonomics
- 24MP sensor offers less resolution than competitors
- Highly specialized for action, lacks versatility for some
- Flagship price point makes it a significant investment

Leading the charge is the flagship EOS R1, which gains Panning Assist, enhanced Servo AF, and a revamped Pre-Continuous Shooting mode-geared toward fast-paced, action-heavy shooting environments.
Canon has also officially unveiled its flagship EOS R1 which they teased back in May. The EOS R1 features two processors, the ability to internally record 6K RAW up to 60p, a host of new AF modes and upgrades, and it can simultaneously record video and stills.

The EOS R1 is Canon’s first official mirrorless flagship and the EOS R5 Mark II is arguably the top camera of the year; together, they anchor Canon’s camera lineup as a seriously well-rounded system for all kinds of photographers and hybrid image-makers. These two cameras usher in a new tier of speed and autofocus performance, with both touting Canon’s most advanced subject detection and tracking technologies to date.
The R1 is a very capable camera but it relies on the smaller R5 MKII to handle higher megapixel photography.
The Canon EOS R1 will “dramatically improve the performance of both still images and video” compared to the company’s previously flagship EOS R3. It’s “coming soon.”
The R1 is all about speed, with a stacked sensor allowing 40 fps RAW bursts with continuous autofocus, and it should be great for video, thanks to its support for 6K RAW capture. One potential downside is the 24-megapixel resolution, which is lower than rivals.
