Our editorial take on the Canon EOS R8
Canon has delivered a compelling proposition with the EOS R8, effectively transplanting the core technology of the much-lauded EOS R6 Mark II into a smaller, lighter, and significantly more affordable package. The result is an entry-level full-frame camera that punches far above its weight class, offering a class-leading 24.2MP sensor and a truly exceptional autofocus system. For hybrid shooters, the video specifications are equally impressive, boasting oversampled 4K at 60p and professional tools like Canon Log 3 recording, features once reserved for much pricier models.
To achieve this aggressive price point, however, Canon made several deliberate hardware compromises. The most notable omission is in-body image stabilization, which places a greater reliance on optically stabilized lenses for smooth handheld work. Furthermore, the use of a smaller battery results in limited stamina for long shoots, and the single SD card slot will be a non-starter for many working professionals who require in-camera backups. These trade-offs define the camera's identity. It is not a replacement for a professional workhorse, but rather a beautifully streamlined tool that prioritizes core image and video quality above all else.
- Flagship-level sensor and image quality
- Exceptional Dual Pixel II autofocus performance
- Impressive pro video features including 4K60 and C-Log 3
- Lightweight and compact body ideal for travel
- Outstanding value for a current-generation full-frame camera
- No in-body image stabilization (IBIS)
- Poor battery life from the smaller LP-E17 battery
- Single UHS-II SD card slot
- Lacks a full mechanical shutter

The EOS R8 looks to represent very good value for money given its feature set and specifications. In a lot of respects, it is a mini EOS R6 Mark II at the same price point as the EOS R7.

The R8 stands out as a new benchmark for what an entry-level full-frame can be; it’s a very well-rounded hybrid model at a great value. It was named in our Top Mirrorless Cameras of 2023 as an ideal transitional camera.
Canon reps described the R8 as a solid option for the photographer moving up the ranks towards cameras like the EOS R6 Mark II and the R3, and it’s an excellent choice for that user.
Canon’s new EOS R6 Mark III is an excellent camera. It’s not a groundbreaking upgrade to the 3-year-old R6 Mark II, but it takes the same body with great ergonomics and adds more resolution, video that now goes up to 7K with open-gate filming, and improved autofocus performance. If you’re in need of an impeccably good all-around camera for anything from wildlife photography to weddings and videography, you can’t go wrong. It’s an easy recommendation, especially if you already shoot Canon and are due for an upgrade. (But a used R6 Mark II is also very appealing if the higher $2,799.99 price is too lofty.)
After trying them out at some of Gran Canaria's most scenic spots, I found one of them to be a camera worth buying and one, not so much.
Coming in at just $1,499 body only, the Canon R8 is one of Canon’s most affordable full-frame cameras, costing more than only the EOS RP, which is getting a bit long in the tooth.
If you're already a Canon shooter who's been waiting to jump into full-frame mirrorless, this is a great, affordable option. If you're a beginner wanting to go full frame and don't care about a control or two, this is also a really awesome pick.
