Our editorial take on the Canon EOS R8
The Canon EOS R8 has earned widespread praise as one of the best entry points into full-frame mirrorless photography. Reviewers consistently highlight its remarkable value, packing the same 24.2MP sensor and DIGIC X processor found in higher-end models into the lightest full-frame body Canon has ever made. With oversampled 4K 60p 10-bit internal recording, Canon Log 3, and Dual Pixel CMOS AF II with excellent subject tracking, the R8 punches well above its $1,499 price point. Multiple reviewers describe it as a "mini R6 Mark II" at a significantly lower cost, making it an ideal upgrade for APS-C shooters or newcomers ready to invest in full-frame.
The camera's hybrid capabilities shine for both stills and video work. The 40 fps electronic shutter, articulating touchscreen, and solid low-light performance up to ISO 102,400 make it versatile across genres. Reviewers emphasize its portability without sacrificing image quality, with one noting it delivers "unbeaten image quality" in its class. While it strips away some advanced controls and features to hit the price point, the consensus is clear: this is an exceptionally well-rounded camera that delivers professional-grade results for creators moving up the ladder or building a long-term Canon RF system.
- Excellent value with high-end sensor and processor at entry-level full-frame pricing
- Lightest full-frame body Canon makes, highly portable for travel and all-day shooting
- Oversampled 4K 60p 10-bit internal recording with Canon Log 3
- Dual Pixel CMOS AF II with reliable subject detection and tracking
- Strong low-light performance and 40 fps electronic burst shooting
- Single SD card slot limits redundancy for professional work
- Smaller LP-E17 battery offers limited runtime compared to larger bodies
- Stripped-down controls compared to mid-range and pro Canon bodies

Canon’s new EOS R6 Mark III is an excellent camera. It’s not a groundbreaking upgrade to the 3-year-old R6 Mark II, but it takes the same body with great ergonomics and adds more resolution, video that now goes up to 7K with open-gate filming, and improved autofocus performance. If you’re in need of an impeccably good all-around camera for anything from wildlife photography to weddings and videography, you can’t go wrong. It’s an easy recommendation, especially if you already shoot Canon and are due for an upgrade. (But a used R6 Mark II is also very appealing if the higher $2,799.99 price is too lofty.)
If you're already a Canon shooter who's been waiting to jump into full-frame mirrorless, this is a great, affordable option. If you're a beginner wanting to go full frame and don't care about a control or two, this is also a really awesome pick.
Canon has just unveiled the lightest full-frame camera in their EOS R series, called the EOS R8, along with a new “all-rounder” full-frame standard zoom lens, the RF 24-50mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM. The camera features a 24.2MP CMOS sensor, oversampled 4K60p 4:2:2 10-bit video recording capabilities, Canon Log 3, and Dual Pixel CMOS AF II with people, animals, and vehicle recognition.
The EOS R8 looks to represent very good value for money given its feature set and specifications. In a lot of respects, it is a mini EOS R6 Mark II at the same price point as the EOS R7.

The R8 stands out as a new benchmark for what an entry-level full-frame can be; it’s a very well-rounded hybrid model at a great value. It was named in our Top Mirrorless Cameras of 2023 as an ideal transitional camera.
Canon reps described the R8 as a solid option for the photographer moving up the ranks towards cameras like the EOS R6 Mark II and the R3, and it’s an excellent choice for that user.
After trying them out at some of Gran Canaria's most scenic spots, I found one of them to be a camera worth buying and one, not so much.
