Our editorial take on the Leica M10-R
The Leica M10-R is a high-resolution rangefinder built for devotees of the M system who want maximum detail without abandoning the manual-focus, stripped-down philosophy that defines this camera line. Its 40-megapixel full-frame sensor is a significant leap from the 24-megapixel M10, delivering exceptional image quality in a body that retains the classic rangefinder experience with a 0.73x optical finder and manual focus only. There's no video, no IBIS, no autofocus, and just a single SD card slot, all deliberate omissions that keep the M10-R focused on stills and the tactile, deliberate shooting Leica M users prize.
Reviewers praise the sensor upgrade and regard the M10-R as a refined, peak expression of the digital M platform. The combination of 40 megapixels, 14-bit DNG files, and Leica's Maestro II processor produces images with fine tonality and detail, while the brass-and-magnesium construction and weather sealing ensure durability. The 4.5 fps burst and 10-frame buffer are modest but adequate for a rangefinder. At over $8,000, this is a specialist tool for photographers who shoot M-mount glass, value the rangefinder workflow, and need high resolution. It's not a versatile hybrid camera, it's an uncompromising instrument for a particular way of working.
- 40MP full-frame sensor delivers exceptional detail and dynamic range
- Classic optical rangefinder experience with 0.73x magnification and manual focus
- Premium magnesium and brass build with weather sealing
- 14-bit DNG raw files and Maestro II processor for excellent image quality
- Compact, focused design with no video or autofocus distractions
- $8,295 price is extremely high and limits audience to committed M shooters
- Manual focus only with no AF system, steep learning curve for rangefinder technique
- Single SD card slot and modest 10-frame buffer
- No video capability whatsoever, no IBIS

Editorial reviews
The Leica M10-R rangefinder camera has a newly developed 40 megapixel sensor that represents a big increase from the 24 megapixels of the previous M10 model.
The best thing about the M10 is that it finally has a decent electronic finder. Unlike the botched one of the M240, the M10's VISOFLEX typ 020 EVF looks great ...
I personally consider the M10-R to be the last and best digital M camera with many of the features M camera users both love and enjoy shooting.
