Our editorial take on the Nikon 8mm f/2.8 Fisheye-NIKKOR Non AI Nippon Kogaku Japan Manual Focus Lens
The Nikon 8mm f/2.8 Fisheye-NIKKOR is a classic manual focus lens from the Nippon Kogaku era, designed to capture a full 180-degree hemisphere as a circular image on film. This Non AI mount lens produces a distinctive 23mm circular image on the frame, making it a specialized tool for ultra-wide experimental photography. Its extreme depth of field eliminates the need for focusing (sharp from 20 inches to infinity at f/2.8), and it includes six built-in filters (Skylight, Medium Yellow, Deep Yellow, Orange, Red, and Light Green) to modify color and contrast without external attachments.
This is a legacy optic that requires compatibility with older Nikon bodies or adapters for modern cameras. The circular fisheye effect is niche, suited for creative projects rather than standard shooting. At over 12 ounces and without a lens hood (due to the extreme field of view), it's a purpose-built lens for photographers seeking a specific aesthetic or archival Nikon glass. The used market pricing reflects its collectibility and rarity.
- Full 180-degree circular fisheye effect for unique creative images
- Six built-in filters for color and contrast control without external accessories
- Fixed focus from 20 inches to infinity simplifies operation
- Non AI mount limits compatibility to older Nikon bodies or requires adapters
- Circular image format is highly specialized and not practical for general use

About this product
The Fisheye-Nikkor actually sees a full 180 degree hemisphere: everything in front, above, below, to either side - all around. And it records this hemisphere on the film as a circular image 23mm in diameter. There is no need nor provision for focusing because of the extreme depth-of-field of the lens (20 inches to infinity at full aperture). And because of its extreme angle, it cannot be used with a lens hood. The Fisheye-Nikkor has 6 built-in filters; Skylight L1A, Medium Yellow, Deep Yellow, Orange, Red and Light Green. weight: 12 1/4oz. | Nikon 8mm f/2.8 Fisheye-NIKKOR Non AI Nippon Kogaku Japan Manual Focus Lens | Built-In Filters | - EX+ - Excellent Plus - With Caps | Used
