Our editorial take on the Ricoh THETA X 360 Camera

The Ricoh Theta X is a one-shot 360 camera aimed squarely at professionals and businesses who need reliable spherical content without fussing with post-production. Its standout feature is real-time stitching at up to 5.7K 30fps, which reviewers call groundbreaking for a standalone camera at this resolution. You get 60-megapixel stills (stitched from dual 48MP sensors), a 2.25-inch touchscreen for on-device preview and control, and 46GB of internal storage alongside microSD expansion. The camera handles stabilization in-camera, making it easy to shoot immersive video without a desktop stitching workflow.

Reviewers consistently praise the Theta X's ease of use and versatility, noting it delivers high-quality 360 content in a pocketable form factor. The addition of RAW (HDR-DNG) capture via firmware update addresses an early limitation, though JPEG remains the default. With swappable batteries, GPS, and a robust feature set, the Theta X sits at the top of Ricoh's consumer-to-prosumer 360 lineup. It is not waterproof and battery life tops out at 55 minutes, so plan accordingly for longer shoots. For those who want polished 360 output without stitching headaches, the Theta X delivers on its promise.

Best for: Professionals and content creators who need fast, high-resolution 360 video and stills without desktop stitching workflows.

At least that’s the way James Malcolm, the president of Ricoh America, sees it, and it’s the thinking behind the Theta S — a $349 360-degree photo and video camera that’s supposed to let you relive moments you capture without excluding you from the scene.
