Our editorial take on the Ricoh THETA X 360 Camera

The Ricoh THETA X solidifies its position as a specialized tool rather than a general-purpose 360 camera. Its design philosophy clearly prioritizes workflow efficiency and high-quality still imaging for professional applications. The inclusion of a large, bright touchscreen was a game-changing move, effectively untethering the user from a smartphone and creating a truly standalone device for capturing and reviewing shots in the field. This, combined with a swappable battery and microSD card slot, makes it a workhorse for high-volume jobs like real estate virtual tours and business documentation.

While its 60-megapixel still photos are sharp and detailed, the THETA X is not without its compromises. Video capabilities, though specified at a respectable 5.7K, consistently trail the quality and stabilization offered by more video-centric competitors. Furthermore, the perplexing decision to launch without RAW photo support was a significant drawback for serious photographers. Although this was eventually rectified through a firmware update that enabled DNG capture, the long wait was a notable misstep for a camera so focused on still image quality.

Ultimately, the THETA X excels within its intended niche. It is a purpose-built device that dramatically streamlines the process of creating virtual tours and capturing spaces. While videographers or hobbyists may find better value elsewhere, professionals who depend on speed, reliability, and excellent still-photo results will find its specific combination of features highly compelling.

Best for: Real estate agents and virtual tour creators who need a fast, efficient, and standalone camera for high-volume still photography.
