Our editorial take on the Canon EOS R5
The Canon EOS R5 was a landmark camera, a true hybrid powerhouse that reset expectations with its 45-megapixel sensor and ambitious 8K video capabilities. Its superb autofocus and exceptional stills quality made it a favorite among professionals. Years later, it remains a formidable tool, though its well-documented video recording limitations due to heat were a significant asterisk on its otherwise stellar performance. It established a blueprint for the high-end mirrorless category that competitors have been chasing ever since.
The arrival of the EOS R5 Mark II feels less like an iteration and more like a definitive statement. Canon has systematically addressed the original's shortcomings while pushing the technological envelope even further. The new model boasts a backside-illuminated sensor for superior low-light performance, a next-generation processor, and the much-hyped return of eye-controlled autofocus. With more robust video specs and a faster overall experience, the Mark II is not just an upgrade. It is the camera the original R5 was always meant to be, a truly versatile workhorse that solidifies Canon's position at the top of the professional hybrid market.

The R series just about proved it can hold its own against the giants in the industry. How exactly does it compare to these existing Canon offerings and a few of its main competitors? You're about to find out, below.
Like a thief in the night, the mantle for the most exciting Canon camera of 2024 was stolen by the R5 Mark II, and for very good reason.
I’ve finally had a chance to test out the new hybrid powerhouse from Canon, the R5 Mark II. The camera comes with much-improved autofocus powered by the new Digic X processor, new eye-controlled autofocus, a backside illuminated sensor capable of faster readout and better low-light performance, and stunning video specs like recording in 8K internally with Canon Log 2 color profile.
Canon's new $4,300, 45-megapixel EOS R5 II offers advanced features like eye-tracking autofocus (AF) that can't be found on any recent Sony model.
My overall Field Test here will therefore focus primarily on the R5 as a stills camera, as I consider myself a photographer first and videographer second. However, I will explore the R5’s video features to a degree in my second Field Test. In this Field Test Part I, I will cover the design and handling characteristics and general user experience as well as overall image quality performance from a stills perspective. So, does the new Canon R5 live up to its spectacularly-sounding spec list? Let’s dive in…
This new Canon EOS R5 C camera is one of the best hybrid cameras I ever tested, and it completely blends the line between small “mirrorless style” filming devices and large dedicated cameras. The camera left me with a feeling of wanting to do much more with it, to the point of me wanting to purchase the EOS R5 C myself.
