Nikon FE2 35mm Camera Body, Chrome Review

The Nikon FE2 is a mid-range 35mm film SLR camera developed in the early 1980's. It's a robust camera built for amateurs or serious enthusiasts, and it comes in both chrome and black versions. The FE2 replaces the Nikon FE body. While it shares most of the FE's features including the popular aperture-priority (AP) mode, the FE2 notably features an upgraded shutter with faster ambient & flash synch speeds as well as TTL OTF (Through The Lens Off The Film) flash metering (with select compatible Nikon Speedlights). Nikon did remove backwards compatibility with non-Ai lenses since the lenses can be upgraded to Ai. The electronic focal plane can fire from 8 to 1/4000 second and has two backup speeds of bulb and 1/250 (M250 on the dial) speeds. The flash is synced at 1/250 (fastest of the time) and the body has a hot shoe and PC Sync terminals. Mechanical wheels and levers allow total control of the body. Exposure comp of +/- 2 stops is set with a top-mounted wheel on the left side of the body and a small lever can be triggered for multi-exposures. AE lock is engaged with a well-placed button and locks the needle in the finder for this version. ISO is selectable on the Nikon FE2 from 12 - 4000. Film advance and rewind are also fully mechanical, though Nikon's motor drives can be used with this body. The metering is center-weighted TTL. A great feature is the use of a highly responsive analog needle for metering (up to a tenth of a stop accuracy). Due to the level of quality construction and the classic compact design the FE2 is still a highly coveted design to this day.
