Our editorial take on the Novoflex ClassicBall 3 II Ball Head
The Novoflex ClassicBall 3 II presents a classic conflict between premium construction and questionable ergonomics. True to the Novoflex name, the German engineering is immediately apparent. This is a beautifully machined ball head with a robust main locking mechanism and a very smooth primary ball movement. For photographers who simply need to lock a camera down securely, it performs its core function with precision. The addition of a dedicated panorama lock is another a welcome, professional-level feature.
However, the central point of contention is the friction control system. The blue adjustment ring, while visually distinct, is a significant functional misstep. It is slippery and difficult to operate, often requiring two hands unless the panning base is already locked. More critically, it fails to provide enough tension to prevent drift with even moderately lightweight camera systems. This makes fine-tuning composition frustrating and undermines the head’s professional aspirations. For a product at this premium price point, such a core usability flaw is difficult to overlook and overshadows the otherwise excellent build quality.
- Excellent German manufacturing and build quality
- Strong and reliable main locking mechanism
- Smooth primary ball motion
- Integrated independent panorama lock is useful
- Friction control ring is slippery and difficult to adjust
- Adjusting friction often requires two hands
- Friction system lacks sufficient holding power
- Movement can feel stiff in certain orientations
- Overpriced for its flawed functional performance

This ball head delivers strong performance, though the tension control could be a little better. We found the panorama lock to be a very useful feature.
Well made in Germany. Smooth motion. Locks with the little lever above. The blue ring around the body is a friction control. That looked like a nice idea until I used it and discovered that it took two hands; one to prevent the body from rotating and the other to rotate the blue ring. (One hand is enough if the body is locked in azimuth, but I usually leave that loose). The blue ring is slippery and can’t achieve enough friction to hold up my A7R5 with only a 280g lens. Motion with the ball pointing sideways in my preferred balanced mode is stiff. I reluctantly give it 2 points out of 10 because of the poor friction ring. That’s pretty harsh, but for this money, it should work better.
