Our editorial take on the TTArtisan 40mm f/2.8 Macro Lens for Sony E
The TTArtisan 40mm f/2.8 Macro is a compelling lens that punches far above its weight class, primarily due to its aggressive price point and true 1:1 magnification capabilities. It serves as an excellent gateway into the world of macro photography for APS-C shooters without requiring a significant financial investment. Beyond close-up work, its 40mm focal length (equivalent to 60mm on full-frame) makes it a perfectly usable standard prime for general photography, product shots, and even b-roll video, living up to the promise of being two lenses in one.
Of course, a lens this affordable comes with specific trade-offs. It is a fully manual lens, meaning both focus and aperture are controlled via rings on the lens barrel. There are no electronic contacts to communicate with the camera, so you will not get any lens data in your files, and you will not be able to control the aperture from the camera body. While the lens delivers impressive central sharpness for its cost, especially when stopped down slightly, the edges can be softer. The working distance at maximum magnification is also quite short, which can be a challenge for lighting your subject or photographing timid insects. These are not deal-breakers, but rather expected characteristics of a budget-friendly manual optic that require a more deliberate shooting process.
- Extremely affordable price point
- Provides true 1:1 macro magnification
- Good central sharpness, especially for the price
- Solid all-metal construction
- Versatile focal length for both macro and general use
- Fully manual focus and aperture control
- No electronic contacts for EXIF data or camera control
- Very short working distance at 1:1 magnification
- Softer performance towards the edges of the frame

TTArtisan has released quite a few lenses lately, and here's a look at the Z-mount version of their 40mm F2.8 Macro.
Chinese manufacturer TTArtisan has just released a teaser of their upcoming lens: the TTArtisan 40mm F/2.8 APS-C Macro. As its name suggests, this lens covers APS-C sensors, it has a 1:1 magnification ratio, and it should come out at an incredible price.
TTARTISAN has a new silver version of its AF 40mm F2 prime lens, which is available in Sony E, Nikon Z, and Leica L mounts.
TTArtisan's super-fast glass is the 35mm f/0.95 and their 40mm f/2.8 Macro Lens for Sony E.
My conclusion is that the 7artisans 60mm f/2.8 II APS-C is a good lens, especially in the context of its low price. Only two things stop it from being better for me: the lack of electronic aperture control and having just 1:1 magnification.
The Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM is a tiny, lightweight lens that uses Stepping Motor Technology for quiet focusing, which is particularly useful for movie capture.
