Our editorial take on the AstrHori 85mm f/2.8 Macro Tilt Lens (Leica L)
The AstrHori 85mm f/2.8 is not trying to compete with top-tier lenses, and that is precisely its greatest strength. Instead, it serves as a powerful democratizing force in the world of specialty optics. By combining 1:1 macro magnification and a functional tilt mechanism at an astonishingly low price, AstrHori has created an accessible entry point for photographers and videographers to explore creative effects that were previously locked behind a significant paywall. This lens is a tool of pure creative potential, inviting experimentation with selective focus planes and miniature effects without demanding a professional budget.
Of course, reaching this price point requires compromises. This is a fully manual lens in every respect, from focus and aperture to the tilt adjustment itself. There are no electronic contacts, so you will not get any lens data in your files. The build is solid and functional, primarily metal, but it lacks the refinement and weather-sealing of its premium counterparts. Optically, it performs admirably for its cost, but users should expect a learning curve and manage their expectations regarding corner-to-corner sharpness and chromatic aberration control. This is not a lens for pixel-peepers, but for creators who value new expressive capabilities over technical perfection.
- Extremely low price point for a specialty lens
- Combines 1:1 macro magnification and tilt functionality
- Unlocks creative selective focus effects
- Offers 360-degree rotation for versatile tilt-angle control
- Solid all-metal construction for the price
- Fully manual operation requires a learning curve
- No electronic communication with the camera body
- Optical imperfections can be present
- Tilt mechanism can feel less refined than premium options

AstrHori has announced its new 85mm F2.8 Macro Tilt lens for a variety of mirrorless camera systems, offering 1:1 magnification and +/-8.5º of tilt and 360º of rotation.
This is perhaps not surprisingly, but Canon has been steadily switching from DSLR bodies and SLR lenses with an EF lens mount to the new RF mount ecosystem. I guess this is a part of camera evolution and the old eventually needs to go and make place for the new.
